Review

Pygmalion

Neath Little Theatre, Westernmoor Road, Neath

Monday, September 22nd

Neath Little Theatre's latest offering sees Paul Rees and Sarah Green - so good together in the award-winning 2006 production of The Collector - re-united as Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolitle in George Bernard Shaw's delightful comedy of manners, directed by Gerald Roderick.

The sixteen-strong cast - including Amy Hall, Joan Powell, Elliot Davies, Ralph Williams, Lee Edwards and Ann Wear - is particularly strong, and Michael Dickerson and Geraldine Davies turn in excellent performances as Alfred Doolittle and Mrs Higgins, whose support for Eliza is especially well conveyed.

Sarah Green's performance as the flower girl who is transformed into a lady is splendid - the scene in which she has to listen to Pickering and Higgins talking about her as if she is not even in the room is beautifully handled - and the many comedic moments are right on the button.

If I have but one criticism, it is that the sparse and minimalistic set jars against the splendour and detail of the costumes - but this is a minor concern given the fact that the performances are strong enough to carry the play through in fine style.
