Pastimes

Neath Little Theatre, Westernmoor Road, Neath

Wednesday(November 23)

Neath Little Theatre has always fared particularly well at comedy, not only because of the comedic talents of individual players but also due to the intimate nature of the venue, which encourages a sense of involvement and warmth on the part of the audience.

This comedy by Brian Jeffries is directed by Lee Edwards and exploits the talents of its five-strong cast to the full: Michael Dickerson and Ralph Williams feature as a pair of cafe owners called Sam and Bill, who might appear to be as camp as the proverbial row of tents but are not all that they appear to be.

When the pair offer temporary accommodation to a cheeky youngster called Linda(a very likeable and endearing performance from Sarah Green)the scene is set for a series of revelations which threaten to turn their world of quiet domesticity and nightly ludo games upside down.

Donna McOnie gives a strong performance as the forthright Connie, but as ever it is Little Theatre veteran Cynthia Pollard who gains the affection and sympathy of the audience in her role as the quietly downtrodden Winifred, played here as a cross between Northern comedienne Hylda Baker and Corrie's Minnie Caldwell.

In his programme notes, director Lee Edwards explains that Neath Little Theatre is currently short of members, which is why the past few productions have tended to feature the same performers. Anyone interested in knowing more about joining the ranks of this otherwise thriving and active society is asked to telephone the theatre on 01639 643462 or email neathlittletheatre@hotmail.com for further details of how to become involved.

In the meantime, Pastimes reaches the end of its run on Saturday November 26 and those who enjoy a well-crafted giggle or two would do well to give it a try.
