Neath Little Theatre was launched in 1935. In the years that followed the dreams of the founder members were realised as NLT grew into a company with their own fully equipped theatre and a membership capable of presenting four full-length productions every season, together with weekly Club Nights.
Members of the existing Neath Dramatic Society combined with a group of local businessmen and academics in 1935 to establish a Little Theatre movement in Neath. Founder members have nostalgic memories of the first headquarters in Water Street and the tentative steps toward the first production in the Gwyn Hall.
Still at Water Street, the Theatre became an integral part of the social scene in Neath. There was however an even greater goal in view to have their own headquarters. Nothing could deter the enthusiasm of the members towards what some called "the impossible dream. Members of those days can recall not only the artistic effort which went into the fight for a place of their own, but also the very real physical "slogging" of those days.
On February 19th, 1955, the dream came true and Neath Little Theatre moved into its own headquarters at Westernmoor Road. It has never looked back and there can be very few Amateur Theatres in the country celebrating 75 active years established in their own theatre, free from debt and constantly improving their standard of performance whilst continuously adding to the amenities of the theatre.
By 1939 Neath Little Theatre was gaining a strong foothold in the town, but then came the war. Members were scattered in the services and some were also unfortunately lost in the hostilities. The theatre, however continued to function and it is undoubtedly true to say that 1939-1945 was one of the most important periods of the theatres history; a time when it could easily have folded. New members were welcomed, mostly short-stay service personnel, all of whom were entertained on the continuing weekly club nights. Like the Windmill Theatre, Neath Little Theatre can claim "We never closed".
None of this could be achieved without the continued dedication of the membership and the support of the general public. Neath Little Theatre is justly proud as it continues to fulfil the need for live theatre in the town, together with encouraging local talent of all ages and providing a cultural, educational and social centre for all.
The company held and supported numerous productions and provided many services to the Gwyn Hall throughout the wartime period. Special entertainment and fundraising for things like "The Spitfire Fund" were all included in the life of Neath Little Theatre. At the end of the war, lost members were mourned, but Neath Little Theatre was still there; thriving and eager to welcome back old members and greet the many new.
The Youth sections not only stage their own productions at the theatre, but also take part in our full length productions from time to time.
Our Youth workshops are divided into 3 sections:

VISITING MR. GREEN
by
Jeff Baron
Directed by Jamie Rees
A funny and touching play about
friendship, family and forgiveness.
What starts as a comedy about two men who do not want to be in the same room together becomes a gripping and moving drama as they get to know each other, care for each other, and open old wounds that they have been hiding and nursing for years.
Translated into 22 languages, with over 200 productions, Visiting Mr. Green has won numerous best plays awards all over the world.
This modern classic is a powerful play that you won't want to miss!
Fresh from their incredible success with The Passion, we are delighted to welcome National Theatre Wales in their first ever visit to Neath!
You are in for a real treat as The Village Social is a hilarious musical comedy, described as The Vicar of Dibley meets The Wicker Man.
Loosely inspired by Euripides The Bacchae, the The Village Social tells the story of an apparently innocent and genteel community fundraising evening that soon descends into hysteria and debauchery. This warped and wickedly funny piece will be performed in village halls across Wales, bringing with it a village social like no other.
The evenings delights include entry into the raffle, a refreshment of your choice and a depraved orgy of blood.

Be My Baby
by Amanda Whittington
Mon 16th - Sat 21st May 2011
Set in 1964, Be My Baby is a play about a group of unmarried, pregnant young women. They have to cope with the shame and dawning realisation that they must give up their babies for adoption. Despite this, the girls' natural effervescence shines through as they develop bonds and friendships.
Be My Baby is a touching and funny play that is punctuated and defined by the songs of the day.
Tickets are £6 (£4 for under 16s).
